A natal chart, sometimes called a birth chart, is a map of exactly where the sun, moon and every planet were positioned at the precise moment and place you were born. It is not a metaphor. It is a real astronomical snapshot: given a date, a time, and a location, the positions of the sun, moon, and planets against the backdrop of the zodiac can be calculated exactly, the same way you could calculate where any of those bodies were on any date in history.

The chart is drawn as a circle, divided into twelve segments called houses, with the zodiac wound around the outside. Each planet gets plotted at its exact degree. The result is a wheel unique to that one moment: two people born an hour apart in the same city will have noticeably different charts, because the sky itself had moved in that hour, most obviously in the rising sign.

Three details drive the calculation: date, time, and place. Date alone gets you the sun sign, which is the level most horoscope columns work at. Add the time and place and you unlock the rest: the moon's exact position, the ascendant (rising sign), the ten planets' houses, and the angles between them. This is why birth time matters so much in a real chart. A chart cast without a birth time has to guess at the houses and the ascendant, and those two things carry a lot of the specificity that makes a reading feel personal rather than generic.
