How to read your Big Three: Sun, Moon and rising sign

The shortest useful introduction to your chart

The Big Three are your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. They are a helpful first way into astrology because they describe three different dimensions of the same chart, rather than three competing labels.

Your Sun sign comes from your date of birth. Your Moon and rising signs require a birth time and location, because the Moon moves quickly and the rising sign changes throughout the day.

Sun: your central drive

The Sun is often used as shorthand for identity, purpose and the traits you develop deliberately over time. It is the part of a chart most people already know, but it is only one placement among many.

Moon: your inner weather

The Moon is commonly associated with instinct, emotional needs and what helps you feel settled. It can explain why people with the same Sun sign may respond very differently under pressure or in private.

Rising: the chart's starting point

The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born. It shapes the first house and the sequence of houses around your chart, making it central to the chart's structure as well as the first impression you make.
