A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It plots where the Sun, Moon and planets were against the zodiac, then divides that sky into twelve houses based on the horizon at your birthplace.
That combination is why a full chart is more specific than a sun sign. Your birthday establishes your Sun sign, but your birth time and location establish the rising sign, houses and the exact angles between placements.
The four parts to notice first
Start with the planets: they describe different drives, such as the Sun for identity, Moon for emotional needs, Mercury for communication and Venus for relating. The sign a planet is in describes its style. The house describes the life area where it tends to show up.
Finally, aspects are the angles between planets. They connect placements together, showing where different parts of the chart work smoothly, pull in opposite directions or create useful friction.
Why an accurate birth time matters
The zodiac rotates across the horizon roughly once every 24 hours. A small difference in birth time can change the rising sign and house placements, which is why a recorded time produces a more precise chart than an estimate.
A chart is a starting language rather than a fixed verdict. Its value is in noticing patterns and asking better questions about what is already happening in your life.
