A natal chart is not just twelve zodiac signs, it is also twelve houses, and the two systems are laid over each other. The zodiac signs describe style, the flavor of how something expresses. The houses describe the actual area of life something happens in. A planet's sign tells you how it acts. A planet's house tells you where it acts.

The twelve houses run in order from the first, which starts right at the rising sign and covers identity, appearance, and how you come across, through to the twelfth, which covers the hidden, the private, and the unconscious. In between: the second covers money and personal resources, the third covers communication and immediate environment, the fourth covers home and family, the fifth covers creativity and romance, the sixth covers daily work and health, the seventh covers partnership, the eighth covers shared resources and transformation, the ninth covers belief and long-distance experience, the tenth covers career and public reputation, and the eleventh covers community and long-term goals.

This is why house placement often matters more to daily life than sign alone. Two people can both have Mars in Leo, meaning they both act boldly and want recognition for it, but if one has that Mars in the tenth house and the other has it in the fourth, that same boldness shows up in completely different arenas: one at work and in public, the other at home and within the family.

Where the houses actually start, the exact degree of each cusp, depends on the rising sign, which is why an accurate birth time matters so much for house placements specifically. Different house systems (whole sign, Placidus, equal, and others) calculate the exact cusp degrees slightly differently, though they generally agree on which sign starts near the first house.
