Your natal chart is fixed. It is a snapshot of one exact moment and it never changes. The sky, obviously, keeps moving. The moon shifts sign roughly every two and a half days. Mercury and Venus move quickly. The outer planets, Jupiter through Pluto, move slowly enough that their positions barely shift within a year. A transit is simply where a planet is right now, today, measured against the fixed positions in your natal chart.

The idea behind reading transits is that when a moving planet lines up with a planet or point in your natal chart, in an aspect like a conjunction, square, or trine, the themes of that natal placement get activated for however long the transit lasts. A fast-moving transit, like the moon crossing your natal Venus, lasts hours. A slow one, like Saturn squaring your natal sun, can run for months, moving in and out of exact orb multiple times as it goes retrograde and direct.

This is what a daily reading actually is: today's transiting positions, compared against your natal chart, filtered down to whichever aspects are close enough to matter right now. It is the same computation whether it is done by a person with an ephemeris or by software, the difference is speed and consistency. Not every transit is worth reading. Most charts have dozens of minor aspects active on any given day, most of them too weak or too generic to say anything specific. The useful signal usually comes from a small number of close, meaningful aspects, especially ones involving the faster personal planets (moon, sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars) making contact with something specific in your own chart, or a slower outer planet beginning a longer transit to a natal placement that matters.

Understanding transits is the difference between a horoscope written for your sun sign and a reading written for your actual chart. The sun-sign version can only ever say something true for a twelfth of the population on any given day. A transit read against your full natal chart, houses and all, is specific to you.
