Dignity asks how a planet can operate
Essential dignity is a traditional system for assessing a planet's resources in a zodiac sign. A planet in a sign it rules is in domicile; in its exaltation, it is honoured. In the opposite signs it may be in detriment or fall, conditions that suggest less familiar support.
The system belongs to a particular astrological tradition and its symbolic logic. It should not be confused with astronomical strength, moral worth or a ranking of people.
Difficulty can produce skill
A dignified planet may express its nature coherently, but coherence can still be excessive or poorly directed. A planet in detriment or fall may need translation, negotiation or compensating strategies; it is not condemned to failure.
For example, Mars in a sign that prefers deliberation may learn sophisticated conflict management rather than act through immediate force. Biography shows whether the condition becomes frustration, craft or both.
Use the whole condition
Sign dignity is only one layer. House placement, angularity, speed, solar visibility, retrogradation and aspects can support or complicate the planet. Traditional assessment often considers several of these before reaching a judgment.
Translate technical labels into plain observations and ask the person whether they fit. Dignity is most useful when it explains the kind of resources a function has available, not when it turns the chart into a report card.
