The Descendant in astrology: meeting others across the chart
How the Descendant and seventh-house cusp describe approaches to partnership, projection and difference without defining an ideal mate.

The point opposite the ascendant
The Descendant is the western-horizon point directly opposite the ascendant. It begins the seventh house in most house systems and depends on an accurate birth time and place. If the ascendant describes how someone meets the world, the Descendant can describe how the world is encountered through one-to-one relationships.
Its sign is often reduced to a list of ideal-partner traits. A better reading asks which qualities become especially visible, attractive, challenging or instructive when another person brings them into the room.
Projection is a question, not a verdict
Because the Descendant opposes the identity-focused first house, astrologers sometimes associate it with projection: qualities recognised first in other people. That does not mean every seventh-house trait is unconscious or that partners are merely mirrors.
Look at the planet ruling the Descendant sign, including its sign, house and aspects. Planets near the Descendant can also make particular relational themes more prominent, but no placement determines whether a relationship will be healthy or lasting.
Read partnership in real terms
Use the Descendant to ask what happens when your own method meets an equal but different method. Which traits do you admire, resist or expect another person to carry? Where could direct negotiation replace assumption?
Consent, communication, shared values and behaviour matter more than chart symbolism. The Descendant can give language to a relational pattern; it cannot identify a soulmate or excuse treating someone as a role in your chart.
