Applying and separating aspects: why direction matters
How to tell whether an aspect is approaching or moving apart, and what that distinction adds to transit and natal interpretation.

An aspect has motion as well as shape
An applying aspect is moving toward exactness; a separating aspect has already perfected and is moving away. To identify the direction, compare planetary speeds and account for retrograde motion rather than relying only on the degrees printed in a chart.
The distinction is easiest to feel in transits. An applying square often corresponds with a theme gathering attention. After exactness, the same issue may still be present, but its peak has passed and the task becomes response or integration.
Natal charts preserve a moment in motion
Some traditions give applying natal aspects greater urgency and separating aspects a sense of experience already being processed. This can add texture, but it should not override planet, sign, house, orb and the person's biography.
The Moon is especially useful because it moves quickly and shows which exact contact it is approaching next. Traditional astrologers built entire timing techniques around that sequence; modern natal readers may use it more gently as narrative emphasis.
Direction improves timing, not certainty
Knowing that Mars is applying to natal Saturn can help distinguish a building period from the days after exact contact. It cannot tell you the specific event, nor guarantee one will occur. Multiple transits and ordinary circumstances still matter.
Use applying and separating status to phrase readings accurately: pressure is increasing, an issue is at its closest, or the intensity is beginning to release. Small language changes can keep a reading aligned with what the planets are actually doing.
